Research Activities
Since joining DIT as a full-time member of staff I have been instrumental in establishing the Audio Research Group as a highly regarded international research entity.

My research has contributed to securing over €2 million in funding and has produced 13 peer reviewed journal and conference publications for both a national and international audience.

I have supervised 3 PhD and 1 Mphil postgraduate researcher to completion;all of which were in the area of speech and audio processing.

My research activities also include reviewing articles for the IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing, the EURASIP Journal and the Irish Signals & Systems Conference. I have also contributed to the speech synthesis TTSbox project ( which provides a MATLAB framework for gaining an understanding of text-to-speech synthesis (TTS).

I have also been involved in some pedagogical research, although a fairly low level. I've received some funding to develop in-house expertise in distance learning and have contributed to the development of group-based problem-driven learning; a particular success has been the RoboSumo competition in which first year engineering students construct fully automated robots.

In 2010 I was awarded a teaching fellowship to develop a system to promote knowledge of core competencies within engineering students ( This system is based upon a suite of online quizzes which students complete on a regular basis.

In July 2006, I played a central role in realising DIT's successful hosting of the IET Irish Signals and Systems Conference though a significant investment in implementing an on-line review system, editing the conference proceedings, publicising the event, scheduling/organising presentations etc
